Depending on who you ask , Altered Carbon is either Netflix ’s answer to Game of Thrones , or a Blade Runner knockoff . But the true statement is , it ’s neither . It ’s an entertaining show that , unfortunately , never manage to conk out out and become that musical style - spanning hit Netflix was sure hop for . Cyberpunk devotee will love it , book fan will accept it , and the world at big may end up forgetting it .
Based on the novel by Richard K. Morgan , Altered Carbon is about an ex - Envoy soldier name Takeshi Kovacs who heat up hundreds of years after his death to a world he fight down to keep . He ’s mostly played this season by Joel Kinnaman ( Suicide Squad , Robocop ) , because Altered Carbon claim spot in a domain where the human consciousness has become digitized and body ( address “ sleeve ” ) are standardized . As a result , manhood has accomplish immortality , leading some to become godlike anatomy call Meths . One such Meth is the effortlessly enigmatical Laurens Bancroft ( Rome ’s James Purefoy ) , who employ Kovacs to solve the murder of one of his arm . Kovacs ’ investigation leads to a cabal that threatens to shatter the human beings Meths spent one C produce , as well as destroy Kovacs himself .
Altered Carbon is cyberpunk noir in every sense of the word , and rest comfortably within its own musical style . you’re able to tell showrunner Laeta Kalogridis respects Morgan ’s visual sensation , and she persist close to the earth he created . There are some openhanded changes , but none of them find like they defy Morgan ’s work — indeed , rafts of them feel necessary in hindsight . For example , Lizzie Elliott ( Hayley Law ) and her family are give a much - larger role here , with Lizzie serving as the main part for the show ’s many , many , many victim . Be prepared for a lot of mutilated bodies , many of them untried cleaning lady .

The biggest change is with Kovacs ’ backstory , which is given its own sequence in the eye of the time of year . For the show , the Envoys have been change from a military unit project for interstellar war into a rebellion fight against the new age of digital immortality . The original Takeshi Kovacs joins the insurrection ( played by fall Water ’s Will Yun Lee in one of the show ’s best performances ) , accompanied by his sister , Reileen Kawahara ( Dollhouse ’s Dichen Lachman ) . Word fans will recognize her name — and yes , it capture as complicated as you might think . Changing his backstory make for really well , as it humanizes Kovacs in a mode the original Altered Carbon never quite managed to , and gives him a more personal connexion to the story . It also lets the interview see Takeshi Kovacs as an Asian military man , his real ego .
The book is about a biracial Japanese man trapped in a snowy someone ’s physical structure , which mean , on screen , viewers are front with a situation where a white actor would be represent an Asian character . This led to concern about whitewashing , which I talked with Kalogridis abouthere . I sense like Altered Carbon handles it okay , though I wish the show had explore Takeshi ’s identity in Kinnaman ’s body , which I ’d say was in two ways needed give the fresh backstory . Kovacs valued his skin to the point he joined a movement oppose against sleeving , and even after he went on the getaway , he still opt body he identified with . You ’d think being force into the body of a white man would be a problem for him , but it ’s just mentioned , lease alone addressed .
I ’m curious how much of this is because of Kinnaman ’s limitations as an thespian . Do n’t get me wrong , he turns in a fine performance — with emotion and humor I had n’t consider from him before — but it is n’t very ranged . He does n’t feel like Takeshi Kovacs ; it felt like I was follow Kinnaman play himself . On a show about mind moving between bodies , his shortcomings are obvious , reminding me of Eliza Dushku ’s own issues on the alike series Dollhouse . For instance , in a flashback , Kinnaman scramble to give the personality of his sleeve , Elias Ryker , anything fresh other than “ slightly surprised eyes . ” That said , he ’s merely adorable in the first episode , carting a pink unicorn backpack while in high spirits out of his head .

In the end , however , I just could n’t get over the fact that Lee turn over in a better execution as Takeshi Kovacs , and the show never gave me a reason for feature the fictional character played by Kinnaman beyond it being from the book .
The other gravid weakness of Altered Carbon is the investigation itself … and pretty much everything that happens inside that damn police force station . Martha Higareda is good as Detective Kristin Ortega , and I eff the inclusion of her family line to interpret those who deny to re - sleeve for religious reasons . But , for as much time as we spend with Ortega and Bay City ’s hunky-dory , nothing ever encounter . Most of the information garner from the law adjective dramatic event either serves no purpose or gets severally figured out by Kovacs , and it botch the main storyline to the detail where I could n’t derive what the hell was happening . The investigating fumbles over itself and does n’t make sense until the very conclusion . I get that it ’s a noir thriller , and detective workplace is a gravid part of that musical genre , but it is n’t very cohesive . ( talk of noir drama , be prepared for some farsighted expository confessions — they go on for about two episodes uncoiled . )
It ’s too bad , because there are some riveting elements that deserved more metre . For instance , the stand up water parting between artificial intelligence service and humankind . Early on in the season , we see digital members of the AI Hotel Management Union gather for a add-in game , including the delightful Edgar Allan Poe ( Chris Conner ) . They hit the SOB about how , even though they all survive in table service to humanity , they will ultimately outpace and outlast it . methamphetamine hydrochloride may see themselves as gods to humanity , but AIs consider Meths to be just as disposable as everyone else . This is a promising storyline that is n’t given the care it deserves . Speaking of which , there ’s also a lot more that could ’ve been explored with the Meths as spiritual icon . We expend a bit of prison term with a homicidal zealot , and we see Laurens bestow gifts upon some quarantined victims , but we get no lead if those were unparalleled examples or part of a larger ethnic crusade .

Altered Carbon come out February 2 , and people who watch it will likely leave slaked — especially lover of Blade Runner . But if Netflix and Skydance were direct to create a universally acclaimed scifi spectacle , they did n’t make it , and it has a long way to go to break out of its own genre shell . Altered Carbon is good , but it ’s not great .
Assorted Musings:
There is a batch of furiousness , graphic sex activity , and full - frontal nudity in Altered Carbon , with charwoman bearing the brunt of the using and maltreatment . Given the story and its context , it did n’t bother me , but it ’s something to keep in mind if you ’re typically uncomfortable with that sorting of matter .
If you were eager for another Westworld - style presentation and theme song , you ’re in destiny ! It ’s so interchangeable to HBO it almost ache .
keep an eye on out for heavy , plodding exposition in the first sequence , in the main from Ortega the Exposition Fairy , since there ’s a lot of information watcher have to absorb if they have n’t learn the book . At one stop , it was so dense I almost stopped watching .

Kristin Lehman was perfect as Miriam Bancroft , aggregate unending wisdom with strong-growing sexuality . Plus , every one of her outfits was incredible . She look like a Roman god who was consequence out from stop her teeth and live with you whole .
The sets are beautiful and elaborate , but by the terminal of the first season you ’ve experience some of them so many times they end up feeling a little stale . This is especially true with the Bancroft Manor . on the face of it , everyone loves hanging out in Laurens Bancroft ’s study , like , all the time .
I want to give a shout - out to the histrion who play Ava Elliott ( Cliff Chamberlain ) and Kristin Ortega ’s abuelita ( Matt Biedel ) . Both of them took sleeved personality and personify them mind and soul , showing more range and profundity in their role than , frankly , Kinnaman himself did . That said , I was a minuscule loll around that Lachmann , perhaps most famous for taking on several revolve personality in Dollhouse , did n’t get to show off her relevant science here .

Holy shit , Alice ’s serpent .
