Speaking on stage before press during a livestream, the host referenced the song as “the Black national anthem.” Alexis asked the “Rise Up” singer how it felt preparing to share “such an important piece of our culture with the world."

“More than anything, it’s an honor. It’s exciting,” Day replied. “And it feels intentional. I like to do things with intention and with purpose.”

She added that she had recently spoken to her mother about the upcoming performance and that the pair agreed that the “song is a hymn.”

“It’s a hymn of triumph, and that’s what I want people to encounter when I sing this song. I want them to know that we have victory and we have peace already… It feels like there’s an honor,” Day continued.

The entertainer explained that the ask previously felt like somewhat of a “burden,” but now it’s more of a chance for her to “spiritually” connect with God.

“I feel like you might have an out of body experience while performing,” Alexis said.

“I hope so!” Day replied, joking. “I hope so, that’d be great, ‘cause my body’s gonna be shaking like hell.”

She has previously taken on intentional roles such as her portrayal of the late American jazz singer Billie Holiday in 2021’sThe United States vs. Billie Holiday.

At the time, the “Stand Up for Something” artist applauded Holiday for her “iconic music, her history, her life, [and] her activism.”

“She was willing to give up her lifeand ultimately did but the legacy of the song and her strength lived, and it lives in every single one of us,” Day said of Holiday’s “Strange Fruit.”

“It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before,” Usher previously said in a statement.

The 2024 Super Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 11 with the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
