At New York Comic Con , io9 chatted with the one and only Bruce Campbell , who ’s one of the producers for the 2013 remake of Sam Raimi ’s furore classic The Evil Dead .
In the line of our conversation , Bruce spin yarn about this remake ’s take on Evil Dead hero Ashley J. Williams , the new Deadites , and why this film wo n’t be a elephantine physical exertion in nostalgic coitus interruptus .
How would you equate this new Evil Dead to the anterior Evil Dead celluloid ?
Bruce Campbell : call back , there ’s no humour in the first one . The first one is a melodrama . This is much back to that . There are no jokes . There ’s no meth - talking , it ’s an sure-enough - time , old - school horror moving picture . But the mythology is the same — there ’s the Necronomicon , you ’re fucking with the wrong rule book . The regulation are the same with regards to bodily taking apart — you have to burn them alive or chop up them up .
How would you describe Mia ( actress Jane Levy ) , the new admirer in Evil Dead ?
Bruce Campbell : She ’s just a veritable mortal like Ash was . She ’s shin with drug dependance — the grapheme , not the actress — and she ’s going to dry out out with a grouping of friends at her old class cabin . She hop-skip to get herself better , but the job is the possession business starts when they find this nasty Koran that they should ’ve left alone . masses guess she ’s just going through detachment , and that lets it get a footling too far along the manner . By the metre they figure out what ’s fall out , it ’s too deep . It ’s a like tragic story of five twentysomethings trying to survive the nighttime .
How would you characterize the particular event for this film ?
Bruce Campbell : It ’s mostly special event make - up . The digital hooey is only to help when we need it . It ’s not the reason we ’re making this movie . It will all find very genuine . You get laid , nail guns to the forehead . Do n’t blank out , the whole first movie was a disaster . It was hypothesize to be six week and it conk twelve weeks . It was the cold wintertime on Tennessee ’s platter . We came from Michigan to escape the winter , and Michigan end up having one of the warm wintertime on record . It was just a ludicrous , endless nightmare shoot .

Bruce Campbell : I do n’t need to give the way away , but know that Fede has made it his own . He ’s not imitate Sam and never mean to . Fans of Evil Dead should palpate comfortable watching this movie , it ’s like putting on a comfortable , terrible twain of shoes . Fede ’s treating it not like an MTV champion . It ’s not masturbatorial . By telling this story in an adult fashion — when the wacky shit take place — it ’s more horrifying than if he treated it like a expectant joke . Sam Raimi handpicked the director here . We were all over this movie like a cheap suit . We ’re as concerned as the fan are about not doing something to wee-wee them off . We want to make two more of these . I want dueling trilogies ! But you ’d have to talk to Fede about that .
Were the cast vicious Dead fans coming in ?
Bruce Campbell : They recognise about it , but they were too young . None of them were abide when we shoot Evil Dead .
Did you happen to see the tribute to Evil Dead in Cabin in the Woods [ spoiler photograph here ] ?
Bruce Campbell : Nope , I have n’t seen it . But we accept that !
last , if you were to remakeBubba Ho - Tepin the way of this new Evil Dead , what would it seem like ?
Bruce Campbell : Well , I ’ve read a continuation , but I did n’t wish it , so I ’m not doing it . The things I did n’t wish are the thing [ Bubba Ho - Tep director ] Don Coscarelli did like . It was tough to harmonise , so I suggested to Don , “ utterly go make the movie . ” I wish him nothing but the best . movie maker have their own sensibility , but I did n’t want to hold him back , with no malevolence .
