The welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad is one of the highest priorities of the Department of State.“The State Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.De Leon’s brother, Gustavo De Leon, also shared a post on the page, thanking those who have searched for their efforts and support.“You have been as subtle as a sledge hammer but I think that’s what we needed to get people stateside more involved,” he wrote, in part. “My family cannot thank you all enough. I ask that you continue to do what you’ve been doing until weget Monica back home.”
