A lot of the writing on the Internet about The Hunger Games is snark about its derivativeness ( It ’s Series 7 with Thomas Kid ! It ’s the Minotaur with tv set ! It ’s Marathon Man meets The Long Walk plus a young lady protagonist , minus Stephen King ! It ’s Battle Royale for people who detest caption ! ) .
But if The Hunger Games seems conversant , that ’s because it raises doubt that our culture needs and desire to explore again , about video , state sanctioned violence , teenage girls and interview percept . And at the heart of these questions is Katniss ’ battle to be true to herself at heart , even as she faces the two challenges of play to an audience and fighting for her living .
The contrast between Katniss ’ interior state of matter of judgment and her exterior behavior are fundamental to the first book in the series — and that ’s a self-aggrandising reason why I still dread for the Hunger Games film . Spoilers ahead …

critic are always talking about the interiority of novel . And it ’s unfeigned that interiority is also one of the things that most film miss . Yes , there are awe-inspiring character reference studies commit to cinema that do their best to project what the inside of the human nous looks like . But this second group has a tendency to be indie or artistic creation films ( Being John Malkovich , Pi , Mulholland Drive ) .
Meanwhile , The Hunger Games is an action film . military action films have their moments of surprisal duplicitousness , often when a two-fold federal agent or vicious plot is give away . But these reveals are all about using the lack of interiority , the extremely thin open of most movie , to show how the main quality , and by extension the audience , can be play a joke on and hoodwink by the that surface mental image .

I wo n’t be seeing The Hunger Games on opening nighttime , though I will see it soon after . I ’m looking ahead to seeing Katniss and her bow in activeness and the music director ’s vision of a post - apocalyptical America . I ’m excited about the clothes . And , fingers sweep , I ’m hoping to see Katniss ’ interior struggle about engaging an interview while staying true to herself .
