If you ’re a Star Wars buff , talking to legendary vocalization actor Corey Burton can be a little scary . After all , on The Clone Wars , Burton was the voice of nefarious Sith Lord Count Dooku , as well as viciousbounty hunter Cad Bane . Neither character is someone you ’d like to meet in a saturnine alley . ( Or bright street for that thing . ) This year , Burton reprised both role to great effect : Bane for The Book of Boba Fett , and now Dooku inStar Wars : Tales of the Jedi.io9 speak to him about the latter .
InDooku ’s three - episode electric discharge , we first see a totally novel version of the character : a unseasoned , heroic Jedi Master with a unseasoned apprentice by the name of Qui - Gon Jinn , years before the story we already know . In the 2d episode , Dooku get to see fissure in his once - beloved Jedi Order , and by the end , we see him fully turn to the Dark Side , setting up the Dooku from Attack of the Clones and , more significantly , The Clone Wars , where Burton provided the voice .
speak to Burton last week , io9 was surprised to hear that when the actor got the call about Tales of the Jedi , his first instinct was to change his Dooku . “ My thought was , let ’s do him like a young sort of Michael York , a young Shakespearian type , ” he said . “ Forward look , challenging , but , you know , positive spirited . And so I had figured on doing a vernal , bright version . Sort of on a new form of version of him . ”

small did Burton know that once recording initiate , his choice for the unseasoned Dooku was not what series author and creator Dave Filoni had in mind . “ I started out and I said , ‘ Oh , well , what do you remember of play him young like this ? ’ ” Burton said . “ And I demonstrated . He was like , ‘ Oh , no , no , no , just do Dooku . Our voices do n’t exchange that much from immature maturity , if at all . Just play the fictitious character . ”
That centering was o.k. by Burton , a veteran of the medium who , unlike hisTales of the Jedi cobalt - star Ashley Eckstein , does n’t like to get too wrapped up in Star Wars lore . “ When I ’m performing , and specially with something like this that ’s very particular , it ’s all under wraps . There are no raider [ and ] I do n’t wish to have it spoiled for myself either , ” Burton suppose . “ I like to be in the moment the character ’s in . So I do n’t like to know anything other than what the character knows within the framework of those particular scenes . I do n’t desire that to shape me if I be intimate that Obi - Wan and Anakin and are plot something . ”
What he does is swear heavily on Filoni and the squad around him . “ I ’m very stray , ” Burton said . “ I ’m very much in the pelt of that character when I ’m performing it . I do n’t think about much else . And again , with Dave in my ear and in my headway , I ’m trying to , through him , be linked as closely as potential with what was in the author ’s mind . And I think together we reach that . ”

Though Burton prefers not to attend into Dooku ’s backstory or think about links to Attack of the Clones , he is excited by the show and savor the fortune to expand on a character he ’d been voicing for so many years . “ I plume myself in being a artificer , a craftiness prole . And every character and every output is this squad effort , ” he said . “ Dave is is the master fabricator . And , in dish out that , hopefully I am bringing that to the microphone . And it all fits together and work something really extra . Something greater than the nitty-gritty of its parts . ”
