Drones are nuts . After all , they ’re automatonlike war machines that kill on command . But the mad scientists at DARPA are working on something that ’s even more nuts : a submarine that can carry an assortment of drones around the ocean and establish them into the air . That ’s kookie .
This pilotless aircraft mothership — that ’s DARPA ’s word not ours — is a work in progress . The bureau just release a package of novel details about what they ’re building , and it sure sounds like quite the automobile . The so - called Hydra program will build a zep that can carry remote-controlled aerial vehicles ( UAVs ) and remote-controlled underwater vehicles ( UUVs ) covertly into conflict zone . Once there , the real magic begins . DARPA explicate the architectural plan in a press release :
The air fomite warhead that will be ejected from the mothership , float to the surface , launching , fly a minimal cooking stove , and conduct several dissimilar types of missions .

Undersea payloads will establish , dock , and recharge from the mothership and gather up intelligence entropy . After their mission they will download information to the mothership , which will communicate it to overlook authorities .
Sounds kind of like a James Bond picture show , does n’t it ? Well that ’s DARPA ’s specialty . This is the agency that brought us everything froma assault and battery - powered human exoskeletontothe robotic cheetah that can run faster than Usain Bolt . And who could block Atlas , the humanoid , DARPA - funded robotwithout a head that can stand on one leg ?

We do n’t yet bed what the Hydra project will look like when it ’s completed , but DARPA ’s affect forward tight with the architectural plan . The next stage of evolution boot off on August 5th when the agency will conduct industry briefings and field proposition . Until then , relish these numbered days of a world without a drone mothership . Because if you thought drone were cracked when they fly around one at a time , just wait ’ til you see a fleet of them detonate out of the sea and yell towards the purview . That ’ll be really nuts .
