Matthew Perrydid not have a dog before hissudden deathon Saturday.
Perry was previously a dog dad to a doodle mix namedAlfred, whom he shared with exMolly Hurwitz. The pair began dating in 2018 andgot engagedin November 2020 beforecalling it quitsin June 2021.
Since their split, Alfred has been a regular staple on Hurwitz’s Instagram. In apost in September, she opened up about her close connection to the pooch alongside a series of photos.
“Alfred is three. He is very annoying a lot of the time, but he is truly the most loving potato. He entered my life during some dark depression, and he helped get me far away from that. He is also cute as all fuck. Cheers to you, Alfredo 💕#adoptdontshop” she wrote.

“In time we will say more, as and when we are able,” the statement continues. “For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”
Perry opened up about the close bond among theFriendsactors, noting how they supported him amid hisstruggles with substance abusein aPEOPLE cover story interviewin October 2022.

“They were understanding, and they were patient,” Perry said. “It’s like penguins. In nature, when one is sick or very injured, the other penguins surround it and prop it up and walk around until that penguin can walk on its own. And that’s kind of what the cast did for me.”
Perry’s death was confirmed in an exclusive statement shared with PEOPLE fromthe late actor’s family. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE on Sunday that anautopsy has been completed, and results are pending a toxicology report.
