quick & Furious Presents : Hobbs & Shaw has three end credits prospect and those scenes tell you everything you need to know about the film . ( No spoilers , I call . )
Scenes during the credits have become rathercommonplace these days . It ’s where filmmakers usually let loose scandalous reveals or take risks that get citizenry talking . In Hobbs & Shaw though , the scenes are just jokes . Funny jokes , for sure , but they tot nothing to the movie overall . Each feel like it was tot up because it did n’t gibe in the movie but citation scenes are cool and this picture show want to be coolheaded so throw them in there .
That ’s Hobbs & Shaw . It ’s a movie that ’s funny , add together very little to the action writing style , and exists simply because it can . That ’s not to say it ’s without merit or entertainment value . Blowing shit upcan be super fun , the film just rarely rises above that .

The bickering between Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Shaw (Jason Statham) is basically all of Hobbs & Shaw.Photo: (Universal)
Directed by David Leitch ( Deadpool 2 ) and written by Chris Morgan ( Fast and angered 3 - 8) , Hobbs & Shaw is the first spinoff of the wildly successful Fast & Furious dealership . It takes two case introduced in the those movies , Luke Hobbs ( played by Dwayne Johnson ) and Deckard Shaw ( Jason Statham ) , and break them not just their own film , but essentially their own franchise .

However , while the Fast & Furious celluloid got their startle meanly , fetishizing car and family value , Hobbs & Shaw keeps those things very much on the outside in favor of big , hefty action that feel more Schwarzenegger and Stallone then Diesel and Walker — and knock battle bodily fluid that ’s more Comedy Central than summer megahit . It ’s a Fast & Furious movie that does n’t really give care that it ’s aside of that enfranchisement .

Vanessa Kirby is one of the best parts of Hobbs & Shaw.Photo: (Universal)
The canonical plot of Hobbs & Shaw is that Shaw ’s babe Hattie ( Vanessa Kirby ) steal a deadly virus from a super - soldier named Brixton ( Idris Elba ) . to vote down Brixton and save up Hattie , as well as the domain , U.S. and UK intelligence independently raise Hobbs and Shaw . Of course , the two man hate each other and after a fairly interesting opening to the cinema where we see each of their life in a split screen parallel , the remainder of the movie sees them at each other ’s throats and finally coming together to save the world .
Almost all of that feel like well - traveled territory . Their bickering is part 48 60 minutes , part Deadpool , part a million other brother cop motion picture . The action is part Fast & Furious , and part Mission : Impossible , with a few scene that sense like full-strength - up lifts of those film . And the story about a A-one virus , I mean , are n’t all these movies about a A-one virus ? There ’s even a joke later on in this film about a super SUPER virus . It ’s all very whacky .
Which , of course , is how the Fast & Furious franchise is perceive these days : as over the top and airheaded . But the first eight films do their good to be at least semi - serious with the absurdness mostly bump to natural action scenes . Here though , Hobbs & Shaw is never serious . From motorcycles that transform and car that twine in the air , to jumping off buildings and irksome - move fistfights , the whole flick is a sketch .

And , as the stars of a cartoon , Johnson andStathamare decently at nursing home . They ’ve done this all before . Each role player takes not just his Fast & Furious fictitious character , but basically their respective vocation as action Cuban sandwich , and turns them up to 11 . Both are a little more cocky , a little bulkier , and a little meaner than common . The fictitious character , and the actors , always feel like they ’re trying to outperform the other . At clock time , that interpersonal chemistry works well but finally , it aim a footling repetitious and numbing .

In fact , the two best thing in Hobbs & Shaw are n’t really Hobbs and Shaw . They ’re their costars , Vanessa Kirby and Idris Elba . Unlike the title characters , Kirby and Elba bring at least a hint of reality and humanity to the ocean of wham - bam military action . Kirby plays a fierce action hero herself whose natural process speak louder than words and , therefore , can stand toe to toe with the jumper lead . Elba , as an enhanced super soldier , has an off the charts assurance that do him seem like a worthy opposer against the two asterisk . Plus , his theatrical role actually has an ethos behind his cerebration , which makes him find shockingly detach from everyone else who blows things up and asks motion later .

That almost all changes in a bright third human activity which convey Sir Jack Hobbs back to Samoa to reconnect with his family . With Hobbs & Shaw , Leitch and Morgan wanted to dive deeply into these character reference and the film does so … for a instant . The Samoa scene is meant to evoke the themes of family from the primary profligate & raging movies and , thanks to performances by Cliff Curtis and Lori Pelenise Tuisano as Hobbs ’ brother and female parent , it does . But , rather quickly , that down - home , grounded , fellowship smell just escalates into another massive action readiness - piece . And while the final natural process is specially jaw - dropping , it ’s a picayune less so when you ’ve just seen a coup d’oeil into a more personal , interesting movie .
Watching Hobbs & Shaw , it would be voiceless to not find at least some use in it . It ’s got personality to dispense with , decent jokes , incredibly grass action mechanism , spate of beautiful visuals , and even some welcome surprises . But without its own identity , without an interesting hook or reverberating aroused through - occupation , most of the movie feel rather shallow — like it ’s seek to impress us instead of engage us . As if it ’s kind of moving-picture show that would need three pointless close course credit scenes just to tweet out one or two more laughs out in case you have n’t had your filling .
