In 2015,Wall Street Journaljournalist Carreyrou reported that the machine Holmes was selling — dubbed The Edison — did not actually work, and that the company was using outside technology and other subterfuge to fake positive test results. Federal authorities then investigated Holmes, indicting her in 2018.

Her story was the subject ofthe HBO documentaryThe Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, and Amanda Seyfried will portray Holmes in an upcomingHulu limited series titledThe Dropoutthat debuts on March 3.

In November, Lawrence toldVanity Fairwhy she decided totemporarily step back from the spotlightafter not appearing in any projects for nearly two years.

“I was not pumping out the quality that I should have,” she said at the time. “I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right.”

“If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?’ " Lawrence continued, adding, “… I think that I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life.”
