Kanan Stark has a choice to make — and it’s one that will come to define him forever.

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Starz released the trailer for the long-awaitedfourth season ofPower Book III: Raising Kanan, which explores the origin story of the drug dealerCurtis “50 Cent” Jacksonmade famous in 2014’sPower.

The trailer begins withWendell Pierce’s Snaps offering Kanan (Mekai Curtis) some advice. “You gotta understand, Kanan, that how people see you now is how they’re gonna see you forever,” he says.

His wife, Pops (Erika Woods), then asks, “How do you want people to see you, Kanan?”

The teen, who just watched his father die at the hands of his mother — and now business partner — knows what he wants. “I want them to see me as me — not who my mother is,” Kanan asserts.

Despite his eagerness to define himself independently from her, Kanan’s mother Raq (Patina Miller) is still looking out for her son.

“You gotta be real careful, Kanan. They didn’t get to where they are without dropping a whole lot of bodies behind them,” she tells him, though warnings like that fall on deaf ears, given Raq’s own violent past.

Still, she tells him, “It’s one thing not to be able to trust my son — and I can almost live with that. But I have to be able to trust my business partners.”

Raq is not the only force to be reckoned with for Kanan this season, though. Italian mob boss Stefano Marchetti (Tony Danza), who has teamed up with Raq and therefore her son, too, doesn’t seem too keen to work with the teen.

“I work with your mother, kid. Not you,” Stefano tells Kanan in the trailer. “Go home, kid. Thank your lucky stars you got a mother who loves you.”

Meanwhile, Kanan and Raq don’t even know that Unique (Joey Bada$$) is, in fact, alive, despite his apparent death at his brother’s hands.

“This b— think I’m dead,” Unique says, likely referring to his former flame, Raq. “I ain’t never been more f—ing alive.”

Season 4 will see Kanan try to “step out of the shadow of his formidable mother” while Raq “questions if she can trust” him at all. As the mother-son duo “continue to expand their drug empire,” they team up with Snaps, Pop and Stefano, while Unique is “working in the shadows, looking for vengeance against those he believes wronged him.”

“The Unique that everybody knows is dead. This guy got his head banged and bone fragments left on the weapon of his execution. He’s not the same,” the rapper, 30, said.

“What people can expect is a way more hyperactive, irritable, just rageful guy. It’s going to be an interesting spin on who this character [is, because Unique] has been, historically, somebody who’s more calculated and smooth with his delivery and kind of conscious and things like that. But I think this Unique is different. This is Unique like you’ve never seen him before.“Never miss a story — sign up forPEOPLE’s free daily newsletterto stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
