StephenandRobbie Amellcouldn’t be more grateful for their latest project being a family affair.
In a conversation with PEOPLE surrounding the release ofCode 8: Part IIonNetflix, the actors, who are also cousins, recalled the special experience of being on the Toronto set of the sci-fi action sequel.
“It’s the best job in the world getting to work with friends and family,” says Robbie, 35. “Steve and I are both from Toronto, so getting to shoot where we grew up and having family come to set and visit [was great].”
“We shot one day down the block from where Steve grew up,” he shares. “We were standing there and he goes, ‘Do you know where we are?’ I was like, ‘Oh, no way.’ He’s like, ‘Yep, right down that street.’ I’m like, ‘The house with the pool.’ He’s like, ‘Oh, yeah.’ "

The home belonging to the character Sergeant “King” Kingston (Alex Mallari Jr.) is “literally a stone’s throw from 42 Berkindale Drive, where I spent 10 years in my childhood, explains Stephen, 42.
“It was the only house on the street that hadn’t been torn down and turned into a McMansion,” continues theArrowalum. “That was cool.”
“It’s very cool, and we’re very lucky,” adds Robbie. “Everybody on set is a friend or family, and everybody works really hard.”
“That’s why I like to think the product comes out so great, is everybody really cares and is invested and takes ownership and pride in what we’re doing,” he says.
Stephen agrees that “it’s really special” that he and his cousin get to work together, adding, “I don’t mean to speak for [Robbie] and he could be entirely sick of working with me, but this, for me, is proof of concept of something that we could theoretically do for the remainder of our careers.”

A follow-up to 2019’sCode 8,the sequel picks up five years later and follows Robbie’s protagonist Connor, who “is out of prison and working as a janitor at a community center, having cut ties with his former criminal associate Garrett (Stephen),” according to an official synopsis.
As for working with Robbie, Stephen tells PEOPLE that it only adds to his pride for the superpowered project, and feels like a true gift.
“I think it’s incidental that we’re family, but the fact that we’ve put this together and are able to shepherd these projects with a lot of help, principally from [directorJeff Chan] — and in this case, Netflix — to the masses, it’s rarefied air,” he says. “It’s not a lot of people get to say they get to do stuff like this. It’s really cool.”
